Rapid megaflood-triggered base-level rise on Mars

چکیده
Abstract The existence of ancient fluvial systems on Mars is widely accepted, but little known about how quickly they formed, or what environmental conditions controlled their evolution. We analyzed a sequence well-preserved inner-bank bar deposits within the meander bends multistacked sinuous ridge in Aeolis Dorsa and compared them to similar features Earth establish required for formation. Our results reveal that these Martian channels were highly aggradational, rising an order magnitude higher than terrestrial rivers. This evolution occurred over very rapid time scales, with our estimates suggesting some entire inner-bar set deposits, therefore aggradational channel, may have formed less single year, upper bounds few decades. suggest this unique channel topography was created by rapidly downstream water body, triggered externally sourced megafloods (e.g., crater lake breaches).

Formation of Box Canyon, Idaho, by megaflood: implications for seepage erosion on Earth and Mars.
Amphitheater-headed canyons have been used as diagnostic indicators of erosion by groundwater seepage, which has important implications for landscape evolution on Earth and astrobiology on Mars. Of perhaps any canyon studied, Box Canyon, Idaho, most strongly meets the proposed morphologic criteria for groundwater sapping because it is incised into a basaltic plain with no drainage network upstr...
متن کاملTTET: Event-Triggered Channels on a Time-Triggered Base
This paper develops solutions for efficient transfer of sporadic (event-triggered) data over a time-triggered communication channel. We present novel and efficient techniques for composite provisioning of the event triggered (ET) and time triggered (TT) paradigms to achieve both the predictability and flexibility inherent in TT and ET systems respectively. As a tangible demonstration of the tec...
متن کاملRapid accumulation of committed sea-level rise from global warming.
As carbon emissions and scientific research have accumulated over recent years, climate scientists have come to see global climate change as an increasingly urgent threat (1, 2). In PNAS, Levermann et al. (3) provide a powerful new indicator of danger. When their findings on the long-term sensitivity of global sea level to global warming (∼2.3 m/°C) are put in the context of recent research on ...
متن کاملModel projections of rapid sea-level rise on the northeast coast of the United States
Human-induced climate change could cause global sea-level rise. Through the dynamic adjustment of the sea surface in response to a possible slowdown of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation1,2, a warming climate could also affect regional sea levels, especially in the North Atlantic region3, leading to high vulnerability for low-lying Florida and western Europe4–6. Here we analyse cli...

new cubs. Previous research has already shown that unstable ice can result in failures of on-ice denning attempts. Less ice than is suitable for denning apparently has led to an increased frequency of pregnant polar bears in this region choosing to den on land, " says Fischbach. Unlike other temperate and Arctic bear species that hibernate during winter months, polar bears remain active and sea...
